The New York State town of Vernon is the location of Vernon Downs racetrack, a popular harness track which has operated for over 65 years. The 6 furlong oval track, with separate 2 furlong chute held its inaugural meeting on 1st July 1953. Its programme of harness racing was well received in the early days, even hosting as many as 162 days racing annually, but became less and less appealing as time went on, until in 2001 there was an imminent threat of closure when crowds dipped below the magic 1000. The track was extended to 7 furlongs, with a 275 metre home straight, and further amenities were provided to increase its appeal. Today it offers just 70 days racing from April to November, has the Zweig Memorial as its principal race, and survives by adding simulcast betting, a racino and video gaming to its array of entertainments to accompany the harness racing.
